Mount Si baseball scores convincing win over MI, 4-9-11

The Mount Si Wildcats and Mercer Island Islanders resumed their suspended game from Wednesday night at Island Crest Park this evening, with one catch. The game was originally supposed to start from the point of their suspension, which was the top of the second inning with the Wildcats trailing 3-0. Instead, the game started from the beginning, and what a difference a couple nights can make.

Mount Si this time opened with the hot bats and kept that up throughout the game, dominating en route to a convincing 11-1 win in six innings; the game ended early due to the 10-run mercy rule. Reece Karalus pitched a complete-game three-hitter, striking out seven, and Trevor Lane went 3-4 with an RBI to lead the 11-hit attack for the Wildcats.

Mount Si scored three times in the first, and they were off and running. The Lane’s started it off, with a Trevor single scoring Robb to open the scoring. Trevor Lane later scored on a Daniel Besmer groundout, and between those two runs Tim Proudfoot crossed home plate on a MI passed ball. The Wildcats scored twice more in the second, with the big play being a steal of home by Dustin Breshears as part of a double-steal attempt, the second straight game Mount Si has had success with this baserunning maneuver. Breshears had reached base on a triple.

Mercer Island’s lone run came in the bottom of the first, and it came thanks to the same player who had the big hit in the rained-out game Wednesday. David Oppenheim, whose bases-clearing double in that game propelled the Islanders to that lead before the weather stepped in and washed it out, singled to score Evan Thompson.

The game was 5-1 Mount Si in the top of the fifth when the bats erupted again for scarlet and gray. Nate Sinner punched home a bases loaded single to score Trevor Lane and Max Brown to make it 7-1. Brown then opened the floodgates in the sixth, with a double that scored Proudfoot. Hudson Luxich capped it off with a double which scored Sinner and Besmer to make it 11-1. Both hits were part of a four-run sixth, allowing Karalus a lot of breathing room in the bottom of the frame to close the door, and he did with a 1-2-3 inning. The senior threw under 75 pitches, a very efficient outing for the Wildcat pitcher.

Brown finished 2-4 with two runs and an RBI.

The Wildcats are home Monday against Liberty. Game time, weather permitting, is 4:30 p.m. at Mount Si.
