Wildcats rise in polls, blast Saints, 4-18-11
Mount Si’s baseball team today saw its state ranking improve, and then they went out and showed why they remain among the best in Washington.
The Wildcats erupted for two season highs – hits and runs in one inning – as they made short work of the Interlake Saints, 14-1. Mount Si set a new high mark for hits – 16 – and scored eight runs in the seventh, also a season best for one inning, to break open what had been a fairly comfortable lead. Dustin Breshears went 2-5 with two runs and four RBI’s to lead the Wildcats.
Mount Si took control in the second with four runs. A Breshears single scored Reece Karalus and Derek Welsh for the key blow of that frame. The only mistake of the night by the Wildcat pitching came in the third when the Saints’ Joey Button hit a home run, but aside from that, Mount Si’s pitchers did the job. Starter Trevor Lane pitched six strong innings, giving up just four hits while striking out seven; Travis Hilleary came in to mop up in the seventh and overcame early struggles to close the door.
The Wildcats scored twice more in the fifth; the key play in that inning was a double steal of second and home which enabled Max Brown to score to make it 6-0. Brown went 3-4 with three runs scored.
Mount Si unloaded in the seventh. The big hit of that big inning was another two-RBI single from Breshears which scored Shane Dixon and Derek Welsh; the Bellevue College-bound senior scored later in the frame on a Robb Lane groundout. Then, Brown and Justin Henak both scored on a double by Karalus which put the icing on the cake for Mount Si, ranked #6 in this week’s Seattle Times 3A poll. This rainkng is the highest the Wildcats have gotten thus far this season in the polls, which they have been part of all season. A separate poll, from the WashingtonBaseballPoll.com website, will be out later this week, and it is expected this poll, put together by Black Hills coach Lem Elway, will also have the Wildcats ranked in a similar spot.
Mount Si is at Bellevue Wednesday as they start the second half of the league schedule. Game time is 4:30. The Wildcats played Bellevue April 7 and won 8-5.
