Thursday news and notes:
-Former Mount Si baseball player Tim Proudfoot officially signed his letter of intent last night to attend Texas Tech this fall. Proudfoot, who was one of several seniors who recently graduated from Mount Si, put his “John Hancock” on the document in front of friends and family at a ceremony in North Bend. Proudfoot hit .360 with nine homers, helping lead the Wildcats to their first-ever state title in baseball this spring. He is one of 26 members of the Mount Si Class of 2011 who signed scholarships or declared their intent to play college sports next school year. Of those, eight, including Proudfoot, have signed scholarships or announced their intent to attend Division I schools next school year for sports. These include among others, as noted yesterday, Joe Farmer (football, FCS Illinois State), Alexis Pearlstein (girls’ soccer, Ball State), and Ryan Herman (boys’ soccer, Santa Clara).
Speaking of Proudfoot, he and teammates Trevor Lane and Max Brown won postseason honors yesterday from the Washington State Baseball Coaches Association. Brown, who will be attending Bellevue College this fall, earned first team nods, while Lane, who will be back at Mount Si this fall as a senior, and Proudfoot both earned second-team recognition on the 3A list. Cedarcrest got a nod on the 2A second team, as senior Paul Wilen got honored for his performance this spring. Wilen has also made a college decision, having signed with Everett CC to play ball with them next spring. Congrats to all.
-On the soccer front, today is a rest day down in Boise at the US Youth Soccer regionals. The afternoon action produced one more playoff qualifier out of the local foursome of teams with Mount Si talent. As expected, that came from the U-16 boys and Eastside FC 94 Strom. They rolled over BNSC Premier out of Boise 4-0 to take top spot in their pool and advance to a playoff match tomorrow against La Roca out of suburban Salt Lake City. La Roca looks like a good foe, too; they scored 12 goals in pool play while giving up just four. EFC Strom, with Mount Si senior-to-be Davis Karaica, joined fellow EFC U-15 Red Bialek’s girls, which feature sophomore to-be Sophia Rouches and is coached by former Mount Si boys’ coach Tom Bialek, as teams we will be following in the playoffs for you tomorrow.
Playoff rounds are single elimination, so a loss and they’re done. We wish these teams luck tomorrow.
Now to the U-17 boys, and EFC 93 Kovats fell to Sereno White from Phoenix 2-0, and that knocked Mount Si senior-to-be Chace Carlson and his teammates out of the tournament. They finished winless in pool play.
Before we finish our coverage of the tournament for today, we slide away from our coverage of Mount Si athletes in the event to bring this story to you. The local Boise newspaper, the Idaho Statesman, has been covering this tournament daily since late last week, and they have a dedicated reporter on the coverage. Anyway, today’s item from the paper is a nice story of a local Boise family who, after reading a Statesman brief earlier this week on a California team being forced to camp outdoors in nearby Idaho City because they were unable to raise enough money to pay for hotel rooms for the week, offered to put the kids up in their place for the remainder of the tournament. Good stuff. Here’s the story.
- Mount Si boys’ summer league team won its tenth game of the summer last night, with a 64-45 pasting of Jefferson in Auburn Summer League action. The Wildcats play twice more tonight, with a shot at a top spot out of their division on the line if they win both games.
-The Valley no longer has a representative in the Little League’s Coast baseball Invitational, as both Falls and Sno-Valley North Little Leagues fell Tuesday night in loser-out games. Falls fell 3-2 to Kirkland National despite solid offensive efforts from Trevor Greshell (2-3) and Ezra Bacon (2-2). Sno-Valley North fell 7-4 to Redmond West. Evan Abraham went 3-3 to lead SVN.
-And a volleyball note for you as well. We learned yesterday of a major addition for the Wildcat volleyball program this fall. Lindsay Carr is no stranger to the Valley either; we are told she went to Chief Kanim Middle School, but moved with her family last year to northern Virginia, where she has been playing this spring with the Northern Virginia Volleyball Academy’s 15s Selects. The team photo is here; from what we are told, we think she is #1, top center. They will be competing in the USA Volleyball JOVC Nationals down in Atlanta starting this weekend, along with two other teams with future teammates of Carr. These are the ITVC 18s Black, with Mount Si senior-to-be Krista Galloway, and KJ 17s, with Mount Si senior-to-be Sarah McDonald. KJ 14s, coached by Wildcat assistant Dave Bachman, are also scheduled to compete. We’ll have all the scores for you here on SVSJ.
Carr and family are moving back to the Valley from what we are told, hence her coming back and joining the Wildcat program.
There you have it. More later.
