On the college pitch, 8-20-11

On the college front, one game of note last night involving a Valley athlete. Cedarcrest HS grad Evan Fassler and his CSU Bakersfield men’s soccer teammates scored a come-from-behind win over the Master’s College in a non-conference contest last night.

CSU rallied from a 3-2 hole midway through the second half to post a 4-3 win over their foes from the San Francisco area. Fassler, a senior this season for CSUB, started and took five of the team’s 16 total shots on goal in the contest. He, however, did not score any goals – those were scored by teammates David Velasquez, Richard Menjivar, Justin Finch and Jesus Sanchez. Finch’s goal in the 73rd minute followed by Sanchez’s tally just a minute later propelled the Bakersfield comeback.

Three more soccer games of note today, all on the women’s side. Eastern Washington, with North Bend junior Brittany Conway, is playing right now against Robert Morris of Pennsylvania in a Florida tournament; later, Fairfield’s women, with another North Bend product, junior Nikki Stanton, opens their season with a tilt against Boston College in Boston, then this afternoon, Ball State’s women, with North Bend freshman Alexis “Lexi” Pearlstein, takes on Western Kentucky in Kentucky
