The week that was in track and field…..

Good Sunday morning. We are going to keep trying this morning to get to everything we need to get to for you including Cedarcrest High School’s baseball season coming to an end yesterday but we have track leading it off this morning. This past week was a busy week for local high school track and field teams as their regular seasons finished. Here’s a wrapup of what happened.

Mount Si boys and girls finish season strong: The Wildcats this past Tuesday took on Mercer Island and Tukwila’s Foster at Mercer Island High School, sweeping the team titles in both events.

Among the headliners on the boys’ side was an all-Mount Si affair in the 110m hurdles, led by the winning time of Nate Ciabattari, who clocked 17.66 seconds. The others who competed for the Wildcats included Tanner Nelson, Drew Freudenberger, Andy McAllister, Chris Winder, Jackson Talbott, Peter Winder, Yuming Zhang and Jaidyn Stephenson-Thomas. Neither of the other schools fielded competitors in that race. The boys’ 4×400 relay was also the exclusive domain of the Wildcats, as all five crews competing were Mount Si represented.

The top “A” crew of Jake Espeland, Sawyer Shelton, Maceo Swanzy and Zander Anderson clocked 3:34.91 to take the win. They were followed by the “D” crew of Josef Treiber, Andy Krejci, Jacob Stakkestad and Tyler Mergenthaler. Mount Si’s “C” crew of Dallen Jensen, Logan Green, Rowan Stannard and Avery King took third, and they were followed by the “E” foursome of Logan Kissel, Cal Potoshnik, Jacob Kowalke and Ridley Smith. The Wildcat “B” unit of John Koetje, Ben Hoover, McAllister and Carter Mergenthaler rounded it out in fifth.

The girls also had a strong showing in the 4×400, as Mount Si’s two units ended up being the only ones in the event as two Mercer Island foursomes ended up not competing as scheduled. The Wildcat “A” unit of Sophia Kono, Ryan McLellan, Emily Rodriguez and Hailey Cossey won the race clocking 4:12.19 and they were followed by Mount Si’s “B” unit of Maya Hewitt, Erika Yaple, Ashley McAllister and Natalie McDonnell, who finished about 30 seconds behind.

Lorelai Justice won a pair of events for the Wildcat girls, taking both the pole vault with a clearance of eight feet, three inches and the triple jump clearing 31’6”. Shelby McCallum and Rachel Arnold rounded out the event winners for Mount Si, with McCallum winning the shot put with a toss of 32’2” and Arnold winning the 200m clocking 27.89 seconds.

Cedarcrest handles Murphy: This past Wednesday saw Cedarcrest sweep Archbishop Murphy in what could be the last time perhaps for good the two schools see each other in regular season competition with the Red Wolves’ move to Kingco next season. CHS swept the team titles over Murphy.

Girls’ highlights included a pair of wins each for Summer Soptich, Kiley Hobbs, Maddy Brooks and Addy Jenkins; Soptich won both the 100m and 200m sprints, clocking 13 seconds flat in the 100 and 26.44 seconds in the 200. Jenkins took both hurdles events as is usually the case for the Red Wolve sophomore; she clocked 17.10 seconds in the shorter-distance 100m and 48.44 in the longer-distance 300m. Teammate Megan Grant was runner-up in both races for CHS.

Brooks pocketed both the shot put and discus, with winning throws of 31’ 6 ½” in the shot put and 116’3” in the discus, and Hobbs cleared 13’9” to win the long jump and 30’ 5 ½” to take the triple jump. Other event winners for the girls included Anna Farrell in the 1600m with a time of just over seven minutes, Elise Luoto in the 400m with a time of 1:07.84 that led a top three Red Wolve sweep in that event; the others in that top three included Anna Linder and Cassidy Moon, and Fiona Pavlovsky in the pole vault clearing 6’6”.

The boys had a new school record in the 4x200m relay. The unit of Dylan Siko, Ethan Swenson, Jaydan Huebner and Jake DiMarzio clocked 1:32.60 to take the win and break the mark previously set in 2016. Swenson won the 400m leading a top-nine CHS sweep in that race clocking 49.30 seconds. The others in the group included Siko, Jake Burton, Micah Nelson, Blake Orme, Doug Moore, Ben Hohnamm, Oliver Escamilla and Landon Swenson. CHS’s boys’ 1600m also swept the top four places in that race, led by a 5:40 winning time from Cardin Klein; the others there in that group included Allston Steere, Ben Glover and Eddie Harper.

Elsewehere, DiMarzio and Chase Meikle shared the long jump crown with both Red Wolves clearing 18’ 1 ¾” and Juuso Luoto swept the throwing events, winning the shot put with a toss of 40’ 8 ½”, the discus with a throw of 112’1” and the javelin with a throw of 145’1”. Meikle swept the hurdles events taking the shorter 110m event in 16.60 seconds and the longer-distance 300m in 42.35.

Liberty: Distance runners from both schools – a total of 29 boys and girls combined – traveled down to Liberty High School this past Friday night for the annual Liberty Twilight distance carnival. All of them competed in the 1600m.

The top Valley results were on the girls’ side, with Mount Si’s Aleeya Cossey taking fourth in a time of 4:59.54, and Cedarcrest’s Lydia Swenson finishing 13th clocking 5:14.08. The boys saw Nate Bergman from Cedarcrest lead the Valley delegation in that race, taking 17th clocking 4:27.85, and Green was right behind in 26th representing Mount Si finishing with a time of 4:31.26.

Postseason meets for both schools start this coming week.
