Lacrosse and soccer…..

Some lacrosse for you this morning. Mount Si Lacrosse Club’s girls’ high school squad finished out the regular season scoring a tight 13-12 win at home over Redmond-based Lake Sammamish last night in Snoqualmie.

Alex Kremer scored six goals leading the Wildcats, who also had goals in the game from Julia Stanley, Alexa Coughran and Sophia Recchi. Goalie Francesca Tamburini made 11 saves on 23 attempts faced in the contest for Mount Si. Stanley and Coughran also had assists in the game, and Coughran also recorded nine draw controls (faceoff wins) and nine ground balls on defense.

Mount Si finished the regular season 10-2 and are ranked sixth in the Washington Schoolgirls’ Lacrosse Association rankings, meaning the playoffs are around the corner. The schedule for that has yet to be announced.

In other lacrosse news this morning:

Cedarcrest boys fall twice: Cedarcrest Lacrosse’s boys high school team went 0-2 this week, falling 19-10 to Kamiak Tuesday night at Kasch Park in Everett then last night in a nail-biter at home 12-11 to Stanwood.

In the game Monday, Henry Hammer led the way for CHS with four goals. Colton Townsend had two goals and two assists, and goals were also scored in the game by Colton Freiheit, Henri Opara and Oliver Summerson. Goalie Lane Gellner made six saves on 25 shots faced for Cedarcrest in this one.

Townsend led the way last night with five goals and an assist for the Red Wolves with Summerson, Opara and Roan Olander also scoring goals in the game for Cedarcrest. Gellner in goal made seven saves on 19 shots faced.

Cedarcrest heads to the playoffs and will meet Overlake next Wednesday at Overlake School in Redmond. Game time is 5:30 p.m.

Mount Si boys with biggie tonight: Mount Si Lacrosse’s boys’ high school squad has a big one tonight with Mercer Island at home in Snoqualmie at 7:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, the Wildcats dropped a 19-7 road loss to Skyline. The Spartans took a commanding 8-1 lead out of the gate after one frame and did not look back in this one as they held serve on home turf in Sammamish. Kendall Saldivar and Liam Mumford each had two goals in the game for Mount Si. Luca Toldo, A.J. Spence and Levi Henretig each added a goal as well for Mount Si. Goalie Zach Baker made nine saves on 28 shots faced for Mount Si. Nick Vermuelen had four goals to lead Skyline.

Valley trio one step away from competing for national college championship: Well, the efforts of a group of MSLC alums have been instrumental in the success of their college team this spring as we have been telling you. Well, on Wednesday they were handling affairs as normal and that propelled their team a step closer to competing for a national championship.

Goals from Eli Spence and Chris Haycock and solid defense from Gabe Henry led Elmhurst University of Illinois’ men to a 13-11 win over Chicago-area rival North Central College in the semifinals of the NCAA Division III CCIW tournament at home outside the Windy City. Spence, a sophomore, scored four goals, and Haycock, a senior, added a fifth, with Henry, a freshman, forcing four turnovers and controlling five ground balls on defense. The win sends Elmhurst into the conference title game tomorrow where they meet Illinois Wesleyan University. The winner wins the conference tournament and automatic berth into the NCAA Division III men’s lacrosse tournament. The game will be at Illinois Wesleyan’s field in Bloomington, IL. The trio are all from Snoqualmie and are Mount Si HS graduates.

College postseason recognition for Duvall’s Rezoski: On the eve of her college conference’s tournament, a Valley athlete received postseason recognition from her college conference.

Colorado Mesa University women’s midfielder Emme Rezoski, from Duvall and a 2021 Cedarcrest HS alum who played her high school lacrosse with MSLC, received an honorable mention designation in the awards announced by NCAA Division II’s Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Rezoski was the face-off specialist for Mesa this spring, racking up almost 80 face-off wins including a school-record 17 in one game against league rival Fort Lewis College. Rezoski also scored four goals this season, the most she has had as a collegian.

Mesa meets the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs in the semifinals of the conference tournament tonight in Denver. If the Mavericks win, they will compete for the conference title and automatic NCAA tourney berth Sunday, likely against tournament host Regis University.

Soccer: Mount Si boys fall
Despite dominating the play last night, Mount Si High School’s boys’ soccer team fell in their WesKing 4A playoff opener to Lake Stevens at home in Snoqualmie 1-0. The loss drops them into a loser-out game next Tuesday at home against the winner of a game tomorrow between Woodinville and Kamiak. That game next Tuesday is at 7:00 p.m. at Mount Si High School in Snoqualmie.

Diamond cuts…..

Good Friday morning. We were unable to bring you track yesterday but we hope to do that today, along with soccer and lacrosse and other things as well later on. But, we lead things off with baseball this morning. Cedarcrest High School’s baseball team gave Lynden all they could handle, but came up short in the Northwest 2A District playoffs last night in Anacortes.

The Red Wolves fell 2-0 to the Lions at Daniels Field in what became a good pitchers’ duel between Cedarcrest’s Jackson Rees and Lynden’s Lane Simonsen. The seniors both gave it their all on the mound in this one, with Simonsen getting the better of it, allowing only three hits in six shutout innings walking three and striking out 10. Carter Smith, Cooper Ayers and Tyler Questad had the lone hits for Cedarcrest and Rees allowed both Lynden runs, one earned, on just four hits, walking three and striking out four. Kael Stapleton led Lynden offensively; the Skagit Valley College signee had a double to headline a two-hit effort, scoring a run and driving in the other.

Cedarcrest drops into the loser-out round and will play in that game tomorrow. It is against arch-rival Archbishop Murphy and will take place at 12:30pm at Daniels. If they win, they advance to play another loser-out game next Tuesday night also at Daniels. This field is located at the west end of Anacortes’ downtown. To get there from Duvall, make your way up to Mount Vernon then cut over on SR 536 to SR 20 and head west into Anacortes. Follow SR 20 through downtown and when the highway makes a left onto 12th Street, take that left and head west toward the ferry terminal. Go to G Avenue and when you reach that, turn left. The parking lot will be at the end of this street after one block. Daniels is the only field being used this year as it is a turf field. The neighboring Volunteer Park field, which has been traditionally used as well, is a grass surface and with the weather expected this weekend, games were likely not going to be able to be played on it. As it was, the two games yesterday that were scheduled for that field were shifted to mid-day games at Daniels costing those teams class time. Cedarcrest’s game being at night they were not impacted by that change.

Preview and pick tomorrow.

Elsewhere in baseball, with the high school stuff powered by our friends at GameChanger:

Bothell advances: Blake Skinner’s double in the sixth scored Wyatt Mickleberry and Sawyer Wickstrom with what turned out to be the lone runs in the game, as Wickstrom dominated on the hill in a 2-0 Cougars win in the opening round of the WesKing 4A playoffs at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue over Kamiak last night. Wickstrom went the distance allowing only five hits and a walk while striking out six.

Woody wins: Ty Vandall had two hits, scored a run and drove in another as Woodinville scored three sixth-inning runs to break a deadlock and take care of Jackson 4-1 in their WesKing 4A playoff opener also at Bannerwood. Tyler Jones scattered three hits and an unearned run in a solid five innings of work on the hill for the Falcons as they advanced. He walked five and struck out seven. Braden Perry also had two hits for Woodinville in the game with a run scored.

Arlington advances: Arlington’s Eagles got a combined four-hitter from two pitchers in a 3-0 win last night in the Northwest 3A District playoffs over Shorewood to advance in that tournament.

Davenport delivers: On the minor-league professional front for you, Duvall’s Aaron Davenport had himself another good outing last night for the “AA” Akron Rubber Ducks. The 2018 Cedarcrest HS alum allowed two runs on only three hits in five innings walking two and striking out six as the Cleveland Guardians-affiliated Ducks pocketed a 4-3 win over the visiting Richmond Flying Squirrels at home in Ohio. Davenport received no decision and his ERA sits at a strong 2.13 as he is having himself a very strong start to 2024. The win moved Akron to 16-8 on the season and they are first in their division in the Eastern League of “AA” minor league baseball. Davenport is slated to once again get the starting assignment in the middle of next week, when Akron travels to take on Bowie in Maryland.

A college career winding down: We’d have to guess the Marenco family from North Bend is in Sioux Falls, SD, today, as Spencer, a 2019 Mount Si HS grad, plays his final college home games on Senior Weekend for Augustana University of South Dakota. The NCAA Division II team finishes up the regular season with two tonight and one more tomorrow afternoon against Minot State University. With a 38-8 overall record, chances are good the team will have plenty more games to play in the postseason. As for Marenco, he went 1-1 in the nightcap of a doubleheader Wednesday for the Vikings which they swept 2-0 and 14-3 in the two games over Northern State University in Aberdeen, SD. Good stuff and we wish Spencer good luck this weekend.

Softball: Cedarcrest falls on Senior Day
It was a special day yesterday for Cedarcrest High School’s 2024 softball senior class of Peyton Hayes, Jo Krivanek, Danica Welch, Emma Duke and Savannah Livingstone as they were all recognized for their tremendous contributions to the Red Wolve program. But once the game started, it became the Haley Oylear and Vivian Knuckey show. The Monroe High School sluggers each hit two homers apiece, guiding the visiting Bearcats to a 14-3 blowout of Cedarcrest in the final Sky Valley rivalry contest as part of Wesco competition with the Red Wolves moving to Kingco next spring.

Pitcher Holly Pettit went the distance in the five-inning game, allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits, striking out three. Paityn Craig homered for CHS to account for most of the scoring, and Duke had the other two hits scoring two runs.

CHS hosts Arlington today at 4:00, also at Cedarcrest HS’s field in Duvall.

Elsewhere around Wesco last night, courtesy of our friends at GameChanger and their apps:

Snohomish 6, Everett 5 (9): Emery Post walked it off for the Panthers at home in Snohomish last night with a single in the bottom of the ninth that scored Zoey Lynch with the winning run. Avery Clark led Snohomish going 2-3 with a double, run scored and RBI and pitcher Abby Edwards went the distance allowing the five Everett runs, one earned, on six hits, walking two and striking out 13. Haylie Oyler paced Everett with a triple and two RBI’s and Anna Luscher had two hits including a double, scoring three runs.

Cascade 14, Lynnwood 5: Homers from Allison Gehrig and Tessa Hahn paced the Bruins to the road win over the Royals in Lynnwood. Hahn had three hits on the game including a double on top of the homer, scoring two runs and driving in two more. Pitcher Mia Walker was the beneficiary of all that run support and she did the rest, allowing the five Lynnwood runs, four earned, on six hits, walking two and striking out eight.

Stanwood 11, Arlington 1: The 2024 edition of the Stilly Valley rivalry game went easily to the Spartans at SHS last night on the strength of a seven-run third inning. Rubi Lopez led Stanwood, with two hits including a triple, scoring twice and driving in three more runs. Pitcher Eliot McDonald allowed an unearned run on three hits in a complete-game performance walking one and striking out four. Hannah Lawrence led Arlington going 2-2 with a run scored.

Archbishop Murphy 18, Marysville-Pilchuck 1: Cedarcrest finishes the season with M-P on Monday and considering how Murphy thoroughly dominated in this one yesterday, if they can get that game in it might be music to the ears of the Red Wolves. Emily Crawford guided the Wildcats, going 3-4 with a double driving in six runs, and Markella Vick had two hits scoring three runs and driving in four more for Murphy. Pitcher Ari Dixon cruised in this one for the Wildcats, allowing an unearned run on only three hits, walking one and striking out eight. Morgan Crawford led Pilchuck with two hits and their lone run.

Odds and ends…..

Quick baseball item now and them we have some previews and picks.

Columbia Basin College, with the help of a Mount Si High School alum, swept a baseball doubleheader last night from visiting Wenatchee Valley College, taking the games 6-5 and 5-4, that second game going 12 innings last night down in the Tri-Cities. Freshman Alex Chamberlain, he of Snoqualmie, went 2-4 with a run scored in the opener for the Hawks then 1-3 with three walks and a run scored in the nightcap for CBC. The two teams play again on Saturday in Wenatchee.

Time for our previews and picks. Baseball and boys’ soccer for you. The Mount Si soccer game should be on NFHS Network for you while the baseball involving CHS we will update later if we get any streaming info on that game for you.

Northwest 2A District Baseball Playoffs: Cedarcrest Red Wolves vs. Lynden Lions, Daniels Field, Anacortes, 6:00: Cedarcrest’s boys have new life in the postseason thanks to a hard-fought 2-1 win Tuesday up in Bellingham in the play-in game over Sehome and the reward is to meet a Lynden team they were supposed to meet in the regular season but did not thanks to rain and the inability to reschedule that postponed contest. But why CHS scheduled that game in the first place was simple – to see where they stood in terms of the district totem pole for when these playoffs came around, so tonight, the boys will see where they really do stand. To be fair, this Lions group is 15-4 and has not seen Wesco opposition this year, so it will be anybody’s guess how they fare.

We’d look for senior Jackson Rees to take the hill tonight for the lower Valley’s boys. He’s winless on the year (0-5) but has a solid 3.97 earned run average with 29 strikeouts in 30 innings pitched for CHS. The offense, as we discussed Tuesday, will continue to be an issue, but the reality of the situation is the Red Wolves probably recognize there’s no one expecting them to do anything moving forward most likely so there should be no pressure on kids to perform. Take each game one at a time and focus on the individual task at hand. They did this Tuesday and it proved successful. So take the same approach tonight. Opponent will be more challenging but who do you suppose has more pressure? Yup. The people in green and gold. Just owing to how good they’ve done this season we take Lynden but hell, CHS we expect will make the Lions have to earn it. And if that happens, we call that a victory also. Lynden 5, Cedarcrest 1

WesKing4A District Boys’ Soccer Playoffs: Mount Si Wildcats vs. Lake Stevens Vikings, Mount Si HS, Snoqualmie, 7:00: The well-rested – and hopefully well-prepared Wildcats after some film study perhaps yesterday – will take on a Lake Stevens team who fell in the Wesco title game Tuesday to Glacier Peak, dropping them into this first-round contest tonight against a Mount Si team that comes in off a nice 2-0 win last Friday night over Newport that put them into the top three Kingco seeds and in a better spot for making state out of this district tournament.

LS is 2-0 against Kingco teams, beating both Newport and Woodinville this season, but they are on the road tonight facing perhaps their most potent offensive threat they’ve dealt with all year in Zach Ramsey, he of 27 goals for Mount Si and among the top offensive threats in all of Washington high school soccer. Mount Si as you know had tremendous success all season against non-conference foes, beating handily a pair of Wesco 3A foes including Cedarcrest in that non-league. So one can expect this to be a Mount Si party but an issue that cropped up in last Friday’s game was a slow start for Mount Si. They’ve got to get out of the blocks quicker against LS, who comes in 10-2-1 on the season.

Provided they do this, we like Mount Si. Mount Si 4, Lake Stevens 0

Rowland, Salmon help Mount Si’s softball ladies make emphatic statement…and the rest of the ladies’ diamond cuts…..

Good morning. Softball leads things off this morning and we hope to have some baseball, track and field and some previews and picks for you later.

Mount Si High School’s ladies have been on a nice roll as of late and last night, made perhaps their biggest statement yet, coming back from a late deficit with a four-run sixth inning to stun Eastlake on the road in Sammamish.

An Abby Rowland two-RBI double sparked that four-run Wildcat onslaught, and strong pitching under pressure by freshman Mary Salmon, in her varsity debut, sealed up a big 7-6 road win over the Wolves at Eastlake High School. Addie Craig went 2-4 pacing Mount Si, but it was Salmon who was especially important, as she pitched 3 2/3 innings of strong relief allowing only two hits and two walks while striking out one.

Mount Si and Eastlake finished the first three innings in a 3-3 tie. After Eastlake scored three runs in the fourth to take the lead and chase Wildcat starting pitcher Clara Connor, Mount Si made their stand in the sixth. It started with one out. Avery Bielenberg reached on an error and following a walk to Tori Travers, up came Westyn Haigh. The freshman singled to drive in Bielenberg and the push was on against a really good pitcher in Eastlake’s Lindsay Ferguson.

Georgia Dennis then struck out to make it two outs for Rowland, so there was plenty of pressure on the Wildcat outfielder. And Rowland delivered the blow, hitting the two-base special scoring both Haigh and Travers. But there was more and it was courtesy of the sophomore’s legs and feet….and perhaps eyes too. Ferguson unleashed a wild pitch and Rowland was off to the races, scoring from second base on that pitch gone awry giving Mount Si the lead. Quick thinking and speed. Things that coach Mike McGee will definitely find useful in Rowland for the postseason. But there’s another thing McGee could find useful – Salmon’s ability to respond to pressure.

The pitcher, with the help of a pair of walks and a hit batter, loaded the bases full of EHS runners in the bottom of the sixth with one out. But Salmon was able to get out of the jam coaxing an infield fly out from Eastlake’s Audrey Borup, who led the Wolves with a homer and three RBI’s headlining a three-hit effort, and a second fly out from Eastlake’s Macie Parthemer, who had a double as well in the contest. So a couple of potent bats in that pressure situation for Salmon and she was able to get the job done. Good stuff from the freshman. Further, Salmon was able to retire the side in the seventh on only eight pitches, getting two outs on the first two pitches straight. So a quality performance for the Wildcat junior varsity ace and one that hopefully will earn her an opportunity to pitch for the varsity in the postseason.

Mount Si with the win moved into a tie for fifth overall with Redmond, who fell to Inglemoor in a wild one up in Kenmore last night. The Wildcats wrap up the regular season at home with a game against Skyline tomorrow at 6:30 p.m., but it won’t be the last time Mount Si will be home. The Kingco Conference has selected Mount Si to host the 4A conference softball tournament this year, and Mount Si will be playing in games at home next week. More on that later.

Hannah Lloyd had a double and two RBI’s for Eastlake. Wolve ace Addi Baumgartner went four innings allowing three runs, one earned, striking out four, and Ferguson allowed four unearned runs in three innings of work walking one and striking out five. Connor went 3 1/3 innings allowing the six Eastlake runs on eight hits, walking two and striking out one.

Also:

Cedarcrest drops third straight this week: Cedarcrest’s ladies have fallen on some hard times this week, falling twice in walk-off heartbreakers already. Last night, the Red Wolves again faced a tough foe and could not break through, dropping a 6-1 decision at home in Duvall to Everett. CHS was held to four hits – two of those belonging to Josie Fiala. Isa Davis homered for Everett pacing a three-hit effort and Mia Hoekendorf shut down the Cedarcrest bats allowing only three hits in 4 2/3 innings striking out 11. Peyton Hayes and Autumn Rafferty had the other hits for the Red Wolves, and Autumn’s sister Lily held her own in the circle, allowing the six runs, four earned, on nine hits in a complete-game effort, walking two and striking out nine. CHS hosts Monroe for Senior Day this afternoon at 4:00 in Duvall.

Another heartbreaking loss for Cedarcrest softball, and perhaps a frustrating one also…..

We hit the softball diamond now, and last night proved to be a frustrating one for Cedarcrest High School’s ladies, as for the second straight night, they fell in heartbreaking walk-off fashion.

A double by pitcher Mia Walker in the bottom of the ninth scored both Sophia Tripp and Kodie Rasmussen with the walk-off runs as Cascade stunned Cedarcrest 4-3 up at Phil Johnson Complex in south Everett. Walker went the distance in the circle for the Bruins, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits, striking out seven.

The teams exchanged a pair of runs each in the fourth. Cedarcrest’s runs came as the result of an RBI double from Peyton Hayes which scored Jo Krivanek, and the Red Wolve senior then scoring herself on a reach by error from Paityn Craig. An RBI triple from Allison Gehrig scoring Rasmussen sparked the Bruins in their half of the frame, and it remained this way to the ninth, when Krivanek scored on a reach by error from Aspen Balzer. Cascade’s Walker then took matters into her own hands, using her bat to close the deal in this one as the Red Wolves fell to a team that came in behind them in the standings in Wesco and also under .500 on the season.

After the gritty effort shown by the Red Wolves and their ace pitcher Lily Rafferty in their Monday loss to league-leading Snohomish, also in walk-off fashion, it could be understandable if the team perhaps didn’t have as much energy as normal in last night’s game. But to lose to a team that as noted is currently under .500 on the season and behind CHS in the Wesco standings and whose pitcher Walker currently boasts an ERA of over five in her freshman season of high school softball, that is something we’d have to guess probably frustrates the Red Wolves to some extent and is perhaps a bit of a concern as well going into the upcoming district tournament.

Gabbi Harrington had two hits for Cedarcrest, while Krivanek also had a hit as well. The Red Wolves are home today and will look to bounce back from their two losses this week hosting Everett. Game time weather permitting is at 4:00 p.m. at Cedarcrest High School in Duvall.

Wesco scores from last night, courtesy of GameChanger and their apps, available on phones and tablets in their app stores.

Snohomish 13, Marysville-Pilchuck 1: Roz Girard led the way for the Panthers as their offense unloaded against Pilchuck last night in Marysville. She had three hits, scored three runs and drove in a fourth for Snohomish as they maintained hold on top spot in Wesco 2A/3A with the win. Alex Flohr went the distance in the five-inning mercy rule result, allowing an unearned run on only two hits, walking three and striking out six. Kendel Sage aided Snohomish going 2-2 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Everett 14, Archbishop Murphy 0: Homers from Haylie Oyler and Isa Davis paced the Seagulls, and pitcher Mia Hoekendorf did the rest, firing a one-hitter as Everett rolled at home. Both Oyler and Davis had two hits each, with the two combining for three runs scored and six RBI’s. Hoekendorf walked two and struck out six in her five innings of work, the game shortened by the 10-run mercy rule.

Arlington 4, Edmonds-Woodway 3: Hannah Lawrence powered Arlington, going 2-3 with a double and RBI, as the Eagles held off the Warriors at home last night up in Arlington. Pitcher Peyton Aanstad, a teammate of Cedarcrest’s Fiala at the select level, went the distance in this one allowing three runs, two earned, on two hits walking three and striking out six. Renee Riggins led Ed-Wood going 1-3 with a double, run scored and RBI.

Marysville-Getchell 19, Mountlake Terrace 8: A homer from Emme Witter led Getchell, who hit the road and scored a win over the Hawks in Mountlake Terrace. Witter finished with two hits for the Chargers scoring twice and driving in three more runs. Lily Balgos led Getchell going 4-4 with a triple; she walked, scored three runs and drove in a fourth. Evie Snow homered for Mountlake; she also doubled in the game scoring two runs and driving in four more.

Lacrosse: Mount Si girls eke out home win
Another strong performance last night from star Alex Kremer led the way for Mount Si Lacrosse’s girls’ high school team, as they scored a tight 14-13 win at home in Snoqualmie over Eastside Catholic.

Kremer scored seven goals and won nine faceoffs (draw controls as they are called in lacrosse) leading Mount Si, who also had goals in the game from Julia Stanley, Sophia Recchi, Alexa Coughran and Bianca Meehan. Stanley had three assists while Coughran had five faceoff wins and eight ground balls on defense for the Wildcats. Goalie Francesca Tamburini made seven saves in goal for Mount Si, who is 9-2 and wraps up the regular season at home tomorrow at Chief Kanim Middle School in Fall City meeting Lake Sammamish, based in Redmond. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Ouch: Something which Mount Si Lacrosse’s boys’ crew isn’t used to much of these days is being shellacked by Kingco league opposition, especially on home soil. Well, that happened Monday as Eastlake came up to Sirius Sports Complex in North Bend and smacked Mount Si 16-4. Liam Mumford had three goals and an assist for Mount Si, who will look to rebound Friday at home in Snoqualmie meeting perennial powerhouse Mercer Island. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Mount Si High School.

Cedarcrest baseball survives to live another day, plus the rest of last night’s baseball…..

Time now for the news and scores from last night. We lead off with baseball and the Cedarcrest High School baseball team found a way to get it done, and in doing so, made it into the Northwest 2A District playoffs.

A sixth-inning RBI single from Josh Polacek allowed ace Luke Thompson to take control of things, and the Red Wolve junior pitcher did the rest, as Cedarcrest rallied for a 2-1 win last night over Sehome in the Northwest 2A play-in game at Sehome High School in Bellingham. Thompson went the distance allowing a run on five hits, walking one and striking out eight, as he came up golden as was expected he would considering how solid a season he has had this spring. Charlie Stalnaker and Carter Smith both had two hits pacing the Red Wolves.

Sehome opened the scoring with a run in the third, then Cedarcrest went to work in the fifth. With two out, Thompson singled, then the next hitter, Smith, unleashed  a double, scoring the Red Wolve pitcher to tie things. Stalnaker led off the sixth being hit by a pitch from Sehome ace Ryder McGrath, then after stealing second base, he was ready to pounce on whatever Polacek could provide, and the CHS sophomore delivered the biggest hit of the season, the biggest hit perhaps of the past two or three, scoring Stalnaker and putting Cedarcrest in front.

Sehome mounted a last-ditch rally in the seventh, putting a lot of pressure on Thompson. It started with a bunt single by McGrath which was followed by a single from Grady Bernhard. So tying and winning runs with none out. Uh oh, right? Not for Thompson, who was able to coax a double play out of the next hitter, Gunnar Anderson. There was still trouble, though, as the tying run was at third in the form of McGrath. Thompson then hit the next hitter, Ben Ricks, putting runners on at the corners again with Ricks being the winning run. But Thompson found a second wind and in perhaps the most emphatic way possible, he finished the job, striking out the next hitter, Keegan Glennon, on three straight pitches to end the ballgame. Gutsy for sure.

McGrath went the distance on the hill for the Mariners allowing two runs on six hits, walking one and striking out 10. Thompson proved to be better though in the end, allowing a run on five hits, walking one and striking out eight for the Red Wolves. Hudson Neff led Sehome with two hits and a run scored.

The Red Wolves meet district top seed Lynden tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. in the first round of the district tournament, taking place at Daniels Field in Anacortes. While the odds may again be long, after last night, it’s all about taking things one game at a time and putting enough together in order for the team to have success.

In other high school action, powered by GameChanger and their apps, available on phones and tablets in their app stores:

North Creek 2, Stadium 1: In a non-conference battle between two top teams from western Washington, Kingco 4A’s North Creek walked it off on the Pierce County 3A League champions last night at home in Snohomish County. Cayden Christopherson did the damage in the bottom of the seventh, singling to score Bailey Castillo to break a 1-1 tie and lift the Jaguars. Brodie Geoghagan had three hits pacing North Creek.

Snohomish 3, Meadowdale 1: Luke Davis pitched a complete-game one-hitter for the Panthers as they advanced in the Northwest 3A District tournament last night at home in Snohomish. Davis allowed one unearned run on that one hit, walking one and striking out 12 for the Panthers. Landon Klein paced Snohomish, with two hits, a run scored and RBI. Isaiah Kepoo-Sabate went the distance on the hill for the Mavericks, allowing three runs, two earned on six hits, walking three and striking out six. Meadowdale’s season came to an end with the loss.

Shorewood 4, Everett 3: The StormRays last night opened their first postseason following the passing a couple of weeks ago of their longtime coach Wyatt Tonkin, and trust us, he is smiling from heaven this morning, as his boys advanced in the Northwest 3A District tournament at home in north Seattle with a strong pitching performance from ace Jameson Connolly, who went the distance allowing only three runs on six hits, walking three and striking out two. Lorenzo Jaramillo led Shorewood, going 1-4 driving in three runs. As for Everett, Luca Morales led the way with three hits. The Seagulls’ season came to an end with their loss.

College baseball
Vandy rallies for extra-inning escape against Tech: Vanderbilt University is among the top teams in the country, but last night, had to rally late to escape against their upstart area rivals from Tennessee Tech.

The SEC’s Commodores, ranked 17th overall in NCAA Division 1, trailed 6-1 into the seventh inning, but scored six runs to take the lead. Tech tied it in the ninth to force extras before Vandy walked it off in the 11th winning 8-7 at home in Nashville.

Senior Troy Baunsgard, he of North Bend and a 2020 Mount Si HS grad, went 0-6 in this one for the Golden Eagles, who resume play Friday opening a weekend series at home in Cookeville, TN, against Eastern Illinois University.

The Snoqualmie Valley Sports Journal’s weekly volleyball report for May 1

The Carnation-based Valley View 16U Sapphire girls’ club volleyball team went 5-0 this past weekend winning their division in the 16U Puget Sound Regional Volleyball youth volleyball championships in Centralia. The team is pictured here, with head coach Emma Anderson (far right) and lead assistant Nikki Warden (front row at right). (Photo courtesy of Valley View Volleyball Club/Nikki Warden)

Good Wednesday morning. A lot to get to this morning including Cedarcrest High School baseball and softball for you. First, our weekly look at local girls’ club volleyball in USA Volleyball’s Puget Sound Region and how Valley clubs and teams are faring. And this past weekend was a very historic one for Valley View Volleyball, as one of the Carnation-based club’s high-school age programs brought home some hardware that we don’t think has been very often seen by that program: a regional championship.

VV’s 16U Sapphire won the Turquoise division of the 16U Puget Sound Regional Championships this past weekend down in Centralia. The team went undefeated in five matches to pull off the feat, but even better, the girls had to work for it in each and every match. “I am super proud of how we played this weekend and I am so sad this was our second to last tournament,” the team’s coach, Mount Si High School alum Emma Anderson, told us by email. She noted that in her matches, her team trailed by significant margins at points in those contests but came back to pocket victories. As an example, in their opening day nightcap last Saturday with EJVBC, they trailed by nine points in the second set but was able to rally and take a 25-21 win in that frame sweeping that match. Key to the success was Lauren Warden, who had seven assists and 25 digs in the two games and strong play by Cruise Cullen, Lauren Blad and Samantha Smith, the trio combining for 32 of the team’s 54 kills on the day. Good stuff. Everyone seemed to have a hand in it and that makes it so much better at this level.

The work ethic came especially true on championship day this past Sunday, as in both of their matches they had to rally from opening set losses to take the wins in three sets in the best of three set format. They beat Rainier Volleyball Club to win the division in a 15-13 third-set heartstopper. “The grit and passion shown by this team this weekend was astounding. I am immensely proud of this team’s ability to fight back in a deficit and earn back the momentum,” Anderson tells us. “We could not have won this weekend without all 12 of our amazing players and we are looking forward to savoring these last few weeks of the season together.”

As we have noted throughout the spring club season, a major element to this Valley View season has been the scheduling philosophy of Anderson and lead assistant Nikki Warden, a scheduling philosophy that saw the girls get a chance to face challenging competition this season. They were supposed to do this over Martin Luther King Jr. weekend down in Eugene at the Hartner Invitational only to see that event get snowed out, then again they did this in March down in Denver at the Colorado Crossroads event, and there, they held their own winning two matches and competing hard in most of the rest of them. Anderson believes this scheduling philosophy is paying dividends for her team.

“I would agree that facing challenging teams from outside our region has changed how our players fight through adversity,” she tells us. “I believe the team has adapted to a more aggressive mindset and fight harder on offense and defense to recover faster than we did earlier in the season. Being able to provide the players in our Valley with harder competition has allowed the typical growth we see over a season ten-fold. All of our spectators who watched us at the beginning of the season to now have noticed the increase of tenacity in this team and it clearly reflects in our record.”

A record which is getting better with every passing week. They only have one more tournament to go this season, which is too bad, but these girls, many of whom are Cedarcrest High School players, are going to be in a good position to be valuable contributors this fall at the high school level, and that, especially for the Red Wolves program as it heads into a hopefully better environment inside the Kingco Conference this fall, could be something to pay attention to if you are a local high school volleyball fan. Good stuff for sure and our congratulations to the team and its coaching staff.

Also: There was one other team with local ties down there at the event this past weekend – the 13U Island Thunder team coached by retired Mount Si High School head coach Bonnie Foote and her daughter, Tahoma High School player Isabelle, and which features the daughter of one of Foote’s Wildcat legends, Robyn Schirmer, went 2-3 in their divisional play and finished 11th overall.

This weekend
Regional championship play continues this weekend for the U15, U17 and U18 divisions, with several players from both Mount Si and Cedarcrest High Schools expected to compete. Also, we hear the club season in Oklahoma is winding down, with the team coached by another one of Foote’s many Mount Si legends, Stephanie Doyle, wrapping up their season at a tournament in Tulsa. So we’ll recap all of that and probably more as well next week in our segment.

With that, that has been your weekly look at local girls club volleyball in the SVSJ.

Our first playoff preview and pick takes us to the baseball diamond to look at Cedarcrest’s opening playoff game tonight……

Valley high school spring sports postseason begins tonight with baseball. With Mount Si High School’s baseball squad not making it to their postseason this spring, Cedarcrest High School’s team is representing the Valley in the high school baseball postseason. And while the expectation is that tonight’s game could be potentially the only game they play, this Red Wolves team is going to try its hardest to make sure that is not the case. CHS hits the road as soon as school gets out headed north to Bellingham for the Northwest 2A District play-in game with Sehome.

WESCO CONFERENCE 2A/3A BASEBALL
NORTHWEST 2A DISTRICT PLAYOFFS, OPENING ROUND PLAY-IN, LOSER OUT
CEDARCREST RED WOLVES @ SEHOME MARINERS
SEHOME HIGH SCHOOL, BELLINGHAM, 5:15 P.M. FIRST PITCH

Both the Red Wolves and Mariners come into tonight’s games under .500 on the season. Cedarcrest finished the regular season 5-15 while Sehome finished 5-13-1. The Red Wolves are ninth seed in this tournament while Sehome is the eighth seed and the winner meets Lynden, the top district seed, Thursday in the first round of the district playoffs in Anacortes.

So how does Cedarcrest overcome the long odds perhaps that are expected and get themselves into the fun in Anacortes? Well, junior Luke Thompson is probably going to need to be the one leading it. He is leading the team in both hitting and on-base percentage, hitting .354 this season with one homer – the only one CHS has hit all season –  and an OBP of .475. Thompson is also the team’s ace pitcher and is likely going to get the call to the mound for the starting assignment there tonight. The junior is 3-1 with a 1.17 earned run average; in 35 2/3 innings he’s allowed only 19 hits and six earned runs, walking 13 and striking out 55. So longtime coach Scott Goldsberry should feel comfortable knowing that Thompson should be able to handle affairs well.

But for the Red Wolves to really feel good, it’s going to have to get other contributors too and that has been a bit of a challenge this spring. Cedarcrest as a team is only hitting .221 and has only scored 59 runs, an average of just under three runs a contest thus far this season. So they’ve got to pick things up a bit for them to be able to make a deep postseason run. We’d look for junior infielder Quinn Larson and senior infielder Cooper Ayers to be strong contributors tonight. Larson is hitting just under .300 on the season and has 17 hits in 67 plate appearances while Ayers has 14 hits in 64 PA’s with a team-leading 11 RBI’s. He is hitting .259 on the spring.

Sehome has had its challenges in a strong Northwest Conference this spring, just as Cedarcrest has in the Wesco. The Mariners faced one Wesco opponent this spring – Arlington – and fell to them, so that might be a bellwether. But Sehome comes in on a two-game win streak, so they may also be getting into midseason form at the right time, too. Junior infielder/pitcher Ryder McGrath and senior outfielders Pierson Lewis and Roen Schonlein could be players to watch for the green and gold of the Mariners in this one.

From the looks of this, we’d like Cedarcrest here if it can get Thompson some run support, which as we mentioned has been a bit hard to come by this spring with the offense struggling to some extent. But Sehome comes from a tough conference, so we’d expect it to be anybody’s game. That said, though, regardless of the end result of tonight’s game and the playoff run, the future for the Red Wolves hopefully will be a bright one. The program, which was a perennial 2A state contender as recently as 2016 when then-ace Aaron Davenport, now with the Cleveland Guardians professional organization, led Cedarcrest to a state runner-up finish, has fallen on hard times over the past few seasons.

A combination of effects from the COVID pandemic shutdowns and just the general challenging environment they’ve faced in Wesco has resulted in a reduced level of turnout which has cost them the ability for the past two or three seasons to field a junior varsity program. With the move to Kingco and the likely placing of the program in the lowest tier for competitive balance scheduling and the resulting more comparable opposition they should see next season, it is hoped the team will start having more success and perhaps get some growth in interest and resulting turnout that will allow this program to rebuild itself back into what once was for them.

We’re going to say this one is a low-scoring affair and if it is that, we like Thompson and company to advance. Take Cedarcrest in a tight one.

CEDARCREST 2, SEHOME 1

Ladies first! Cedarcrest’s Rafferty locks horns with Snohomish’s Edwards in instant classic, along with a Mount Si playoff clinching win….and the rest of Kingco and Wesco!

Good Tuesday morning. A lot of softball on the ledger this morning and we start with an instant classic last night in Snohomish involving Cedarcrest High School’s ladies.

Red Wolve pitcher Lily Rafferty and her Snohomish counterpart, Abby Edwards, matched each other tit for tat pretty much in what became perhaps the best pitcher’s duel this Wesco Conference has seen in years. The two of them combined for 41 strikeouts in last night’s game, which was decided as one might imagine in dramatic fashion.

In the bottom of the ninth, with two outs, Alex Flohr walked it off for Snohomish with a single scoring Rozlynn Girard and giving the Panthers a thrilling 2-1 victory over Cedarcrest at home in Snohomish in a game that perhaps, despite the loss, sent a huge message to the Northwest 2A District about the Red Wolves’ formidability in the upcoming district playoffs.

Both pitchers went the distance with Edwards allowing the one CHS run, unearned, on four hits, walking no one and striking out 23 in her nine innings while Rafferty allowed two runs, one earned, also on four hits, walking two and striking out 18.

The Red Wolves opened the scoring with a run in the second. A fielding error by Edwards enabled Aspen Balzer to score that run, and Rafferty’s magic kept CHS in front from there until the seventh, when with one out, Avery Clark bunted back to Rafferty, who made an error fielding it, and this allowed both Clark to reach and Hannah Siegler to score the tying run. Lola Fryc and Josie Fiala each had two hits for CHS, who is back today, likely with Emma Duke in the circle considering how much work Rafferty did last night, taking on Cascade at 4:00 up at Phil Johnson Complex in south Everett. That field is a turf field so the game will get in regardless of the weather.

Mount Si rebounds, locks up postseason trip: Down 6-1 after three innings, Mount Si High School’s bats woke up and rebounded late, and in doing so locked up a trip to the postseason for the second time in three seasons with a 12-6 win over the woeful Newport Knights last night in Bellevue.

Avery Bielenberg led the way for Mount Si with two doubles, scoring twice and driving a third run for Mount Si. Pitcher Jenna Nowak also did a lot of damage, getting three hits offensively including a double, driving in three runs, and she pitched four perfect innings of relief striking out three for the win.

Things started as noted in the fourth inning, with Bielenberg’s first two-base special scoring Anna Braukus and sparking a three-run frame that got Mount Si back on a good footing to push forward. They did this with three more runs in the sixth; a Nowak single and resulting Knights error scored Maya Engel to put the Wildcats in front for the first time, then Mount Si closed the deal with a five-run seventh anchored by a double from Abby Rowland that drove in both Tori Travers and JV callup Maggie Potoshnik to seal this one shut. Mount Si, at 9-7, is at Eastlake tomorrow looking to gain ground on the teams ahead of them in the standings looking to get the best possible playoff position. They currently sit sixth overall in the conference with that 9-7 league record, with the top six teams earning trips to the district tournament. Newport dropped to 1-15 on the season and is out of the playoff hunt. Allie Barashkoff led the Knights going 2-4 with a run scored and two RBI’s.

The Wildcats’ starting pitcher Bella Scappini allowed three runs in her one inning of work on four hits with a strikeout, then reliever Madison Brand worked two innings allowing three runs herself, two earnd, on five hits with a walk. Nowak then came in and slammed the door shut in this one in the circle allowing Mount Si a chance to make it back into the contest.

Eastlake 5, Skyline 4: Lindsay Ferguson and Hannah Lloyd homered for Eastlake as they moved into a tie for second in Kingco 4A with the backyard rivalry win at home over the Spartans last night in Sammamish. Audrey Borup had two hits including a double for the Wolves, scoring a run and driving in two more, while Ferguson’s homer headlined a three-hit effort for the Eastlake senior. She scored a run and drove in three runs, and it all was useful for Addi Baumgartner, and the Wolves ace went 6 2/3 innings allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits, walking four and striking out three for Eastlake, now 11-5 in league play. Piper Swanson had a hit and three RBI’s for Skyline and pitcher Addi McGillis went the distance for the Spartans in this one. The freshman allowed five runs, four earned, on 12 hits, walking four and striking out four for Skyline, now 5-11 in conference and out of the playoff hunt.

Stanwood 10, Mountlake Terrace 0: A homer from Reagan Ryan powered the Spartans to a Wesco home win last night over the Hawks in Stanwood. Rubi Lopez had a hit and walked twice for Stanwood, driving in three runs. Pitcher Eliot McDonald scattered six hits over four innings in a dominant mound performance for the Spartans in a game shortened by the mercy rule after five innings.

Inglemoor 17, North Creek 10: The Vikings are very much out of the playoff chase but no matter, they decided to put on a show with the bats for the fans last night at home in Kenmore. Inglemoor hit a total of six homers in the game, two of them by Gracie Toney. Gabi Toney, Emilie Desiliet, Jade Cisneroz and Shannon Tierney all parked ones over the fence as well for the Vikings, who dropped the Jags into a second-place tie in Kingco 4A with Eastlake as a result of this one. Lexi Saladin went the distance for Inglemoor allowing all 10 NC runs, eight earned, on 12 hits, walking seven and striking out two. Emma Gochenour had three hits pacing the Jags, driving in three runs. North Creek is now 11-5 in conference, as noted tied with the Wolves for second place two games behind first-place Bothell.

Shorewood 6, Marysville-Getchell 4: Shorewood pitcher Emma Kellum guided the StormRays with a solid effort in the circle in their Wesco home win over the Chargers last night in north Seattle. Kellum went the distance allowing four runs, three earned, on eight hits, walking two and striking out six. Lillian Perreault led Shorewood with two hits, scoring two runs. Lily Balgos led MG with two hits, including a triple, scoring two runs.

Issaquah 6, Bothell 1: The Cougars seem to be in a bit of a freefall, now having lost their third straight game after starting the season 13-0 in Kingco 4A league play with last night’s loss to the Eagles. Shae Erickson powered Issy, with a homer then went to work going the distance in the circle allowing a run on six hits walking three and striking out 13 as Issy stayed tied for fourth overall in the conference at 10-6 with Redmond. Kolbi Schmer led Bothell with two hits driving in a run and Berlin Roberts went the distance in the circle for the Blue Train in a losing effort, allowing six runs, two earned, on five hits walking three and striking out two. The Cougars are 13-3 and remain tops in Kingco, but are really feeling the loss of ace pitcher Julianne Rose, who has not pitched in a couple of weeks.

Edmonds-Woodway 16, Shorecrest 10: A trio of Warriors had strong offensive performances last night as Ed-Wood won the Wesco slugfest with the Scots in north Seattle. Catie Ingalls led the way for the Warriors, with three hits including a triple, scoring a run and driving in two more. Renee Riggins also had three hits for Ed-Wood, scoring two runs and driving in a third, and Anna Marsh also had three hits for the Warriors, scoring two runs and driving in two more. The offensive support proved useful for pitcher Zoey Glaros, who went the distance despite allowing all 10 Scot runs on 10 hits. She walked 10 but struck out seven. Lyla Ann Taing led Shorecrest, with a double, triple and run scored.

Woodinville 6, Redmond 5: Addi Hagen homered for the Falcons as they surprised the Mustangs last night on the road in Redmond. Alex Olson was 3-4 with a double and run scored for the Falcons, who dropped Redmond into a tie with Issaquah for fourth in Kingco 4A at 10-6 with the result. Woodinville, at 5-11, has been eliminated from the playoffs. Kati Cygan led Redmond going 4-4 with two doubles, a run scored and two RBI’s and pitcher Ainsley Barcalow allowed three runs over five innings of work on eight hits, walking four and striking out seven.

Meadowdale 9, Arlington 4: Homers from Mia Cantu and Hallie Weeks powered the Mavericks to a Wesco home win over the Eagles in Lynnwood. Pitcher Olivia Feistel went the distance for Meadowdale, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hit, walking three and striking out six. Maddie Mitchell paced the Mavericks going 3-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.

The weekend wrap!

Good Monday morning. We lead our weekend wrap off from yesterday’s action with a look at softball and perhaps a special, but yet bittersweet, day for one lower Valley athlete, as she played her final college regular season home game.

It has been quite the college career for Duvall’s Michaela Carter with Fordham University’s ladies. Carter, a 2018 Cedarcrest HS grad, has been a starting outfielder with the Rams for much of her college career, and she came back as a fifth-year senior this season looking to make one last trip to the NCAA tournament, which she has been to once with the school. Fordham wrapped up their home schedule yesterday with a game against the University of St. Louis from Missouri. Carter was 1-2 in this one but the Billikens made a statement with an eight-run fourth and they cruised to a 12-3 five-inning victory with it being called early by mercy rule. The Rams drop below .500 at 24-25-1 but are very much in the thick of the race for the Atlantic 10 championship; they will have a slot in the conference postseason tournament.

They wrap up the regular season with three this weekend in Chicago against Loyola University of Chicago, then host the conference tournament next weekend.

Also from college softball:

Skidmore swept: Skidmore College’s Thoroughbreds from New York had themselves a long four-hour bus ride across upstate New York to get from their Saturday game site in Canton down to Ithaca for a makeup pair yesterday with Ithaca College. The Skidmore ladies weren’t able to get a lot going yesterday as they were swept by the host Bombers 4-1 and 6-0 in the two games, which took place in similarly rainy conditions to what we had here at home in the Valley, although it was about 20 degrees warmer.

Sophomore catcher Madison Bonham was 0-2 in the nightcap game. She is from North Bend and a 2022 Mount Si HS grad. One of those at-bats came with the bases loaded and two outs in the first inning, but she struck out, costing Skidmore a chance to take command. Ithaca then scored a pair of runs in their half of the frame and that was pretty much that as the Bombers finished things off, dropping Skidmore to a woeful 7-27 on the season, 1-11 in league play in NCAA Division III’s Liberty League. Skidmore finishes the season with two Saturday at home in Saratoga Springs, NY, against Clarkson.

Wrapping up things on the youth front:

Strong finishes for local teams at USSSA tourney: Three teams with ties to the Valley finished well at this weekend’s USSSA Season Opener tournament down in Lacey. Sammamish’s SFC Spartans 14U’s finished runner-up in the “C” division tournament while both 12U representatives from Snoqualmie’s Wildcat Fastpitch Club took third in that age group’s “B” division tournament.

SFC dropped their championship game to the Elma Xtreme 6-2. Mount Si High School’s Mary Salmon guided the SFC side in this one, going the distance with only two of the six runs being earned on six hits. She struck out five in the circle, and at the plate was 2-3 with a triple and an RBI. Also, Skyline High School’s Emily Beckerle had two hits for the Spartans, which feature players from both Sammamish and the North Bend/Snoqualmie areas. As for the WFC sides, the ‘Cats West crew was one-hit in their semi-final loss to the New Level team from Puyallup 11-0, and the ‘Cats Duxbury squad came up short against the Montesano Bulldogs, dropping an 11-7 decision in their semi-final with the team from the Washington Coast.

New Level ended up winning the title in the 12U “B” division.

Good thing Cedarcrest isn’t going to have to face her at districts in the future: The Snohomish Shock 14U Campbell finished out their weekend at the USA Softball of Seattle’s Sidewinder Invitational last night in Auburn cruising to a 15-0 win over the Calgary Adrenaline from Canada. With Cedarcrest High School’s move to Kingco this fall, this will take them out of the Northwest 2A District, and that perhaps could be good news because there appears to be a pitcher that could be a challenge in the future for many of these teams up north.

McKenna Edwards, who will be a freshman this fall up at Sedro-Woolley High School, fired a no-hitter over the three innings of this contest which was called early due to time limits. Edwards walked three and struck out three for the Shock, which feature future Red Wolve Olivia Lowell. She was 0-2 with a run scored. Sedro-Woolley is perennially one of the top teams in the 2A Northwest Conference, and should be expected again this spring to present a challenge for CHS and other teams in the upcoming district event. With Edwards in the fold next year, that could make the Cubs a more dangerous team.

Baseball: Despite Valleyite’s efforts, Tennessee Tech swept
Another solid day at the plate for a North Bend product proved not enough as his college team fell, getting swept in their weekend series.

The University of Tennessee-Martin completed a sweep of a weekend set with Tennessee Tech, taking the finale 8-4 yesterday in Martin, TN. Senior Troy Baunsgard, a 2020 Mount Si HS grad, was 2-5 with a run for the Golden Eagles, who have a game tomorrow with Vanderbilt.

Elsewhere around college baseball:

Lower Columbia sweeps pair from division leaders: Lower Columbia College gained ground on NWAC West-leading Tacoma CC, beating the Titans in two games yesterday down in Longview, 13-8 and 5-4. Sophomore Jake Smith played in both games for the Red Devils, going 0-4 in the opener with two runs scored and an RBI, followed by an 0-2 effort in the nightcap with a walk and run scored. He is from Snoqualmie and a 2022 Mount Si alum. Fellow Wildcat alums Jack Berg and Oliver Lang, both of whom are on TCC’s pitching staff, did not pitch in the twinbill yesterday for the Titans. Both of those young men are also from Snoqualmie.

Edmonds sweeps to close weekend: Edmonds Community College’s Tritons took two yesterday at home in Edmonds against Bellevue CC, winning the games 5-1 and 6-5. The first game saw freshman Tristan Aasland take the mound for Bellevue and go 4 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits walking three and striking out five, taking the loss. Teammate Gabe Villaflor was 0-3. Villaflor, from Duvall, was 1-4 with a run scored in the nightcap, but a bases loaded hit-by-pitch won it in the bottom of the ninth for Edmonds. Levi Joyce, a graduate of Eastlake High School in Sammamish, a Mount Si Kingco 4A rival, was the batter hit by that pitch scoring the game-winning run in that second game.

The two teams finished out their rain-suspended game from Saturday night as well, with Bellevue taking it 8-6. Aasland, a 2023 Mount Si HS grad from Snoqualmie, was the winning pitcher in that one for the Buldogs, allowing a run on two hits with a strikeout. Villaflor was 1-5 with a run and Duvall’s Sheldon Egger started the game on the hill for Edmonds, with the Cedarcrest HS alum allowing three runs, two earned, on 10 hits, walking three and striking out four. He received no decision.

Linn-Benton splits with Southwestern Oregon: Linn-Benton’s guys traveled down to Coos Bay, OR, yesterday and took the back end of two with Southwestern Oregon, winning that game 4-3 in eight innings after SWO won the opener 4-1. Sophomore Aidan Dougherty played just the second game for L-B’s Roadrunners, going 1-4. He is from Snoqualmie and a 2022 Mount Si HS grad.

Whitworth sweeps Linfield: Whitworth University’s Pirates blasted visiting Linfield 16-5 over in Spokane yesterday to finish out a weekend sweep of their conference rivals from Oregon. The Pirates took two on Saturday from the Wildcats, winning the games 6-3 and 12-11. Junior Kevin Corder, from Snoqualmie, played both games of the doubleheader, but got yesterday off. In the doubleheader, he was 0-1 in the nightcap game but also saw action late in the first game with no stats reported. He is a 2021 Mount Si HS grad.

Track & Field: Fantastic effort from group of Red Wolves at Sunny & 70
Strong performances from several Cedarcrest High School athletes aided solid mid-pack finishes for both the Red Wolve boys and girls at this past Saturday’s Sunny & 70 meet up at Lakewood High School in Arlington. CHS’s boys finished 16th overall as a team and the Red Wolve girls took 15th. Sehome, from Bellingham, won both team titles.

On the boys’ side, Chase Meikle did well in both hurdles events, taking fourth in the 110m shorter distance event clocking 16.77 seconds, then sixth in the longer-distance 300m event with a time of 42.37. Nate Bergman took seventh overall in the 1600m with a time of 4:32.09 and Juuso Luoto finished second in the javelin, with a toss of 147 feet, five inches. All of them earned sunglasses for their top-eight finishes. Just missing out on some sunglasses themselves were pole vaulter Jason Brimley and the Red Wolve 4×100 crew of Dylan Siko, Nick Berens, Jaydan Huebner and Jake DiMarzio, both of whom were ninth in their respective events.

The girls had a pair of two-time sunglasses receivers. Lydia Swenson was third in the 800m clocking 2:23.74, and fifth in the 1600m with a time of 5:20.38. Addy Jenkins was third in both hurdles events, running the shorter-distance 100m in 17.26 and the longer-distance 300m in 48.55.

The meet, according to coach Bruce McDowell, was his 400th give or take in 31 years as coach at CHS. “The performance marks might not have been there due to the poor weather but we certainly held our own in competitiveness for the day,” he told us by email. The Red Wolves host Archbishop Murphy on Thursday for their Wesco finale.

Lacrosse: Whitworth ladies fall in regular season finale
It has been a historic season for Whitworth University’s women’s lacrosse squad, and an equally historic season for their freshman star, North Bend’s Campbell Vincent. The 2023 Mount Si HS/Mount Si Lacrosse Club grad scored four more goals yesterday but the Pirates came up short, dropping a 12-11 decision to visiting Willamette University from Oregon yesterday in Spokane in the regular season finale for both teams.

Vincent also had an assist in the game and ended the regular season with an eye-popping 54 goals and six assists, the first Pirate player to ever have 50 goals in a season. Whitworth is 12-5 overall and finished play in the NCAA Division III Northwest Conference at 8-4, both of which are the best-ever records for a season in program history. The Pirates and Bearcats are set to rematch in the opening round of the conference playoffs this weekend.

Also:

Mesa ladies finish regular season: Colorado Mesa University’s women scored an 11-4 win to close out their regular season at home in Grand Junction, CO, yesterday over visiting Westminster College from Utah. Junior Emme Rezoski, from Duvall and a 2021 Cedarcrest HS/MSLC alum, won three faceoffs and had two shots, one on goal, with no goals scored for Mesa, who advances to the NCAA Division II Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament. The first game in that event is on Friday.
