News on a Wednesday……

Good Wednesday morning. We are back this week with our weekly volleyball report which we will have for you in a moment. First, we have news from the links. The Washington state high school golf tournaments are taking place this week over in Spokane, and one Valley high school’s girls’ golf team will be in line for a state title today.

All five of Mount Si High School’s girls’ golfers competing in the state 4A tournament over in Spokane made the cut out of round one yesterday, led by a strong 75 from Maia Miller on the par-72 Creek at Qualchan course, south of downtown along US 195. Also making it were Emma Sheeks, Hallie Kappen, Sydnie Phensgavath and Katie Kremer. All of their scores were well back, so all of them will need to significantly improve in order to be in contention for a team title, but anything is possible today, so we will keep an eye on it for you. Wildcat boys’ junior Charlie Gaffney also did well, firing a one-over 72 on the par-71 Indian Canyon Golf Course layout; that course is about a 10-minute drive from Qualchan west of downtown along I-90 and the Sunset Highway near Spokane International Airport.

Meanwhile, a pair of Cedarcrest High School golfers advanced at the 2A events, taking place east of downtown in Liberty Lake. Boys’ golfer Nash Swanson carded an 82 at Liberty Lake Golf Course while top girls’ Red Wolve competitor Hadley McDonough fired an 87 at MeadowWood Golf Course, both next door to one another in that suburban Spokane Valley community. McDonough’s teammate Katie Linder fired a 99, which was a personal best score, but did not make the cut to the second day today.

The remaining competitors tee off shortly this morning and we will continue to follow it for you here.

Wildcat Will Gregory led the four-person Mount Si delegation for the Bellevue-based Dragons, going 2-2. Fellow ‘Cat Tucker Koval also had a hit, and a third Mount Si’er, Tanner Swanson, started on the mound and pitched three solid innings allowing a run on two hits walking four and striking out five. The fourth Wildcat, Jones Kasperson, went 0-1.

The Dragons are likely to compete in this weekend’s Art Wright Memorial Day Invitational tournament, the first major summer baseball tournament for high school players in the Puget Sound area, then will resume league play on June 4 when they host Rock Creek from Maple Valley. The game is at Mount Si High School in Snoqualmie and starts at 6:00 p.m. Admission will be free.

They are taking this weekend off then will have a game next Tuesday taking on Washington Baseball Academy at Courter Field on the Bellevue College campus. Time now for some volleyball.

The Snoqualmie Valley Sports Journal’s weekly volleyball report for May 22
Well, we are back with our second to last installment of our weekly volleyball series – the last installment will be next Wednesday when we wrap up for you the goings on at the final tournament for many teams locally. That is this weekend.

Valley View Volleyball’s 16U Sapphire, seen here, are among three teams from that Carnation-based program that will be competing in this weekend’s Emerald City Classic in Seattle.(Facebook photo, Valley View Volleyball)

The Emerald City Classic is an event that has taken place for many years and is once again this year being hosted by the Washington Volleyball Academy at the University of Washington and at the WVBA headquarters facility, Academy Sports Center in Lynnwood. Games start on Saturday and finish on Memorial Day, next Monday. There is going to be a strong Valley participation level this year, led by three teams from Carnation-based Valley View Volleyball. The organization’s 15U Sky and both of their 16U teams, the Silver and Sapphire, are going to be competing. The squads feature a number of players from the Valley, mostly Cedarcrest High School and Tolt Middle School. Also, several teams from other local clubs including Bellevue-based Sudden Impact and Kent-based North Pacific Juniors featuring players from Mount Si High School will be competing, and a pair of WVBA squads with coaches that have past ties to the Red Wolve volleyball program will also be participating in the tournament, which brings together high-school and middle-school age teams from all over the Northwest and western Canada in for, as noted, what will be the last tournament for many of these teams in the 2024 winter and spring season.

This year, the ECC is a standalone tournament; in past years, the Bellevue-based Northwest Juniors program sponsored its own Memorial Day weekend tournament, but this year decided not to do that and has sent their teams to compete in the ECC competition.

There is an admission fee to see the games this weekend in person at both locations and the games are also being streamed via the BallerTV streaming service. All of the information about those things and other tournament-related information is available here at their website if you want to head down or go online to support these young ladies from our community.

As in past years, we will attempt to provide weekend coverage for you here, but will wrap this all up for you next week in our final segment of the 2024 season.

This has been your weekly volleyball report covering the goings on in USA Volleyball’s Puget Sound Region and how Valley teams and players are faring in the SVSJ.
