Diamond cuts to start the new week!

Good Monday morning. We will try to get you softball, basketball, track and maybe some soccer as well for you later but we lead off our weekend wrap with some baseball this morning. A solid effort from a Mount Si High School grad proved not enough for his college summer team, as they fell at home last night to a Valley-based squad.

Wildcat alumnus Jake Smith went 2-4 with a run scored and RBI for the Everett Merchants as the Pacific International League team was doubled up by the Snoqualmie-based Northwest Honkers 10-5 last night at home in Everett. Smith, a sophomore this spring at Lower Columbia CC in Kelso, made it onto the starting lineup with the Red Devils late in the season and has continued that into the summer schedule. He is a 2022 Mount Si grad. Cedarcrest alum Cameron Padron played in the game for the Honkers and was 0-3 with a run scored.

NWH is home tonight for a game with the Seattle Gumberoos. The game is at Mount Si High School and starts at 6:30 pm.

In other college summer action:

Dougherty chips in for Wenatchee: Smith’s fellow 2022 Mount Si alum, Aidan Dougherty, helped the cause for his Wenatchee AppleSox as the West Coast League team finished a quick trip up Highway 97 north of the border to the interior of Canada’s British Columbia province blasting the Kamloops NorthPaws 15-5 at Norbrock Stadium in Kamloops, BC.

Dougherty, from Snoqualmie, went 1-4 with a run scored and RBI pacing the Sox, who got in the bus and made the almost seven-hour trip south across the border back to Wenatchee last night following the game. They are home tonight facing the PIL’s DubSea Fish Sticks in a non-league game at Wenatchee Valley College at 6:30, seeing Dougherty facing a former Mount Si coach, Elliott Cribby, who is the coach of the Fish Sticks this summer. Cribby, who won the Washington state 3A high school title as Mount Si coach in 2011, is currently an assistant coach at Central Washington University.

Youth baseball: Another Swanson big fly as Bellevue select team leaves it on the field in Boise
Bellevue’s Dragons Elite 18U select team made their way home up I-84 last night from Boise, ID, but not before leaving it all on the field for their finale at the weekend Bullpen Series tournament, thanks largely to their sizeable Valley delegation.

Mount Si High School’s Tate Swanson homered, his second of the weekend, and several other Wildcats on the Dragons also chipped in, but Maple Valley-based Chase Baseball had the last laugh, walking this one off in eight innings, 8-7, at Bishop Kelly High School in Boise ending the Dragon weekend in the Idaho capital. Swanson finished 2-4 on the day with the homer, scoring two runs and driving in two more. Mount Si’s Jones Kasperson started on the mound for the Dragons and worked six innings, allowing five runs – two earned – on five hits walking four and striking out four getting a no-decision in this one. He was 1-4 at the plate with a run scored and RBI.

Other Valleyites on the Dragons as noted also pitched in. Wildcat Pat Rein was 1-3 while teammate and fellow MSHS’er Will Gregory was 1-2 with a walk and run scored. Mount Si’s Tucker Koval was 1-2 with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI and Eastside Catholic’s Connor Cunningham, who has family in the Valley, was 1-4 with an RBI. Rounding it out, Mount Si’s Drew Hossfeld was 0-2.

The Dragons will be back in action later on this week.

Cedarcrest’s Questad delivers dagger in extras for Dirtbags: A triple by Cedarcrest High School’s Tyler Questad in the eighth inning proved monumental for his select team, the 18U Washington Dirtbags, as the Duvall team eked out a 1-0 win over Washington Baseball Academy in an early-morning game yesterday on Mercer Island. Following the triple, Mount Si’s Brandon Wallace was able to successfully hit a sacrifice fly out deep enough to the outfield allowing Questad to score the walk-off run.

Pitcher Luke Thompson, from CHS, worked five scoreless innings allowing two hits and three walks striking out seven and receiving no decision. Getting the win in relief was Bellevue High School’s Brandon Powell, who worked three innings of clean baseball striking out four. Both guys offensively went 1-3.

Other Valleyites in the game included Mount Si’s Cody Morse, who was 1-3, and Cedarcrest’s Quinn Larson, who went 0-3. The Dirtbags are back in action also later on this week.

Federal Way Knights 6, Lakeside Recovery 16U Elite 5 (game one, doubleheader): The Knights took the first of two over Issaquah-based Lakeside last night at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue. Mount Si’s Cole Taylor was 1-2 with a run scored pacing Lakeside. Teammate – and fellow ‘Cat – Scott Corder was 0-3 with a walk and run scored.

Washington A’s 18U Premier 9, Boys of Summer Blue 6: The A’s scored a win over their Bellevue-based rivals last night down in Ravensdale. Fresh off walking the graduation aisle this past Friday night, now former Mount Si players Colin Fraser and Clay Crooks played in this one for the A’s. Fraser started on the mound and got the win, despite allowing the six BoS runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings, walking four and striking out seven. Crooks was 2-4 pacing the Sammamish-based A’s scoring a run and driving in a second.

Elevate Northwest Bugge 16U 7, Prospect United 1: Woodinville-based Elevate handled affairs last night down in Auburn taking care of the Puyallup-based squad. Cedarcrest’s Reed Gilmore was 0-1 in the game for Elevate.

Lakeside Recovery 16U Elite 6, Federal Way Knights 3 (game two, doubleheader): Lakeside rebounded in the nightcap of their doubleheader with the Federal Way team to split the pair at Bannerwood. Taylor was 2-3 with a run scored while Corder again went 0-3 with a walk and run scored both pacing Lakeside.

Narrows Baseball 9, Washington A’s 18U Premier 8: The A’s dropped this Ravensdale contest to the Tacoma team last night. Crooks saw action defensively behind the plate late in the game recording a caught stealing for the A’s. He had no at-bats.
