News on a Saturday….

Good Saturday morning. We have some basketball to get to get you started this morning.

Mount Si High School’s boys’ basketball team dropped their opener at the big Section 7 summer tournament in Phoenix last night, falling 66-49 to Las Vegas’s Bishop Gorman High School. The game was tight at halftime but Gorman outscored the Wildcats 40-24 in the second half to pull away for the victory. Brady Hennig led the way for Mount Si scoring 25 points while Lattimore Ford added 14 along with 11 rebounds for a double-double. Those two are expected to be the key offensive weapons this winter for the Wildcats, who will be retooling following their state championship season this past winter.

Chris Baudreau and Nick Jefferson each had 14 to lead a balanced Gorman scoring attack.

The Wildcats are playing Roosevelt High School from California in a morning game this morning. Games are streaming on BallerTV, which is a subscription service. Google BallerTV for more information.

Softball: Cedarcrest grad’s homer leads club team to win
Yesterday saw a new member join the Valley high school baseball and softball “bomb squad” of home run hitters this summer, as a Cedarcrest High School grad’s big fly aided her team to a win.

Peyton Hayes just last Friday was walking down the graduation aisle at the Duvall school’s class of 2024 graduation ceremony in Redmond, and yesterday, she was on the ground down in Dalton, GA, and braving stifling near 100-degree heat with humidity to match to deliver the goods for her squad, hitting a two-run homer to key a four-run second inning for her AI Bandits 18U Breer team as the Puyallup-based squad picked up a 4-1 win over the New Jersey Stars to close out pool play at the Scenic City weekend tournament. The win was the lone win in pool play for the Bandits, who play in the playoffs starting today.

The Bandits played a second game yesterday, in which Hayes did not participate; the team fell to the Colorado Batbusters in that contest 7-2.

This event finishes up tomorrow. There was also another weekend tournament of note down in Portland featuring teams with local players. Highlights on those games from GameChanger and their apps, available on phones and tablets in their app stores.

Moundtime 9, Northwest Grapettes 16U Yarwood 3: The Portland-based team opened play at the Premier Girls’ Fastpitch national qualifying event beating the Kirkland-based Grapettes. Mount Si’s Bella Scappini was 0-1 with two walks in the game for NWG.

Northwest Grapettes 18U McGee 11, Northwest Elite 0: The team coached by Mount Si head coach Mike McGee cruised to an easy win over the Oregon team in their PGF qualifier opener. Recent Wildcat grad Tori Travers walked in her lone plate appearance for the Grapettes, and scored a run.

Northwest Grapettes 16U Yarwood 4, Warrior Academy 2 (8): The Yarwood crew needed extras last night to take care of the California team to split the opening day of play with a win and loss each. Scappini was 0-3 with a run scored for NWG.

Northwest Grapettes 18U McGee 2, Oregon Thunder 2: The McGee ladies and the Oregon team made it through seven innings and ended up in a draw; we do not know if this is the final score or if they will finish the game up this morning. Travers in last night’s proceedings was 0-2 with a walk.

Baseball: Wenatchee falls
In West Coast League college summer action last night, the Wenatchee Apple Sox dropped an 8-5 decision at home in Wenatchee to the visiting Walla Walla Sweets. Aidan Dougherty was 1-3 with a run scored for the Sox. He is a 2022 Mount Si HS grad from Snoqualmie and will be playing collegiately this fall at the University of Connecticut. The two teams continue play tonight in Wenatchee.

Washington Dirtbags 18U 3, Narrows Baseball 2: Mount Si’s Cody Morse singled walking it off scoring teammate Noah Vandevort, from O’Dea Hugh School in Seattle, lifting the Duvall-based team to a thrilling win last night over the Tacoma team at Liberty High School in Renton. Morse’s heroics made a winner on the mound of recent Cedarcrest grad Cooper Ayers, who pitched a clean third of an inning in the seventh to get the win. He also doubled in the contest for the Dirtbags.

Red Wolve senior-to-be Luke Thompson was strong on the mound for the Dirtbags going 6 2/3 innings allowing the two Narrows runs, one of which was earned, on four hits walking three and striking out six. Thompson had no decision. CHS’s Quinn Larson was 2-2 with two runs pacing the Dirtbag offense, while Mount Si’s Isaac Bruce was 1-2 with an RBI. Cedarcrest’s Tyler Questad was 1-3 and fellow Red Wolve Jake Polacek was 1-2 pacing the victors in this one.

Washington A’s 18U Showcase 10, Stod’s Knights 3 (8): The Sammamish-based A’s needed a little extra time to unload on the Bellevue team in the opening game of the Battle of the Bats GSL weekend tournament down in Auburn last night. Players tied to Mount Si High School were key to the win.

Avery Procter doubled and tripled for the A’s, as they exploded for eight runs in the eighth to break a 2-2 tie and cruise to the win. He scored a run, drove in two more, and pitched six strong innings allowing two runs on five hits, walking three and striking out nine. Taylor Davis took the win striking out the side in the seventh in relief for the A’s; he was 1-3 with two walks and a run scored. Kenny Russell doubled to headline a two-hit effort for the A’s, walking once, scoring a run and driving in a second. Owen Krasowski was 1-4 with a run and mopped things up on the mound in the eighth, walking one but striking out two, and Ryan Ruffin was 1-3 with a run scored and RBI.

Elevate Bugge 12, RSP Baseball 11: Woodinville-based Elevate needed everything and the kitchen sink to outlast the Tri-Cities team at an event in Spokane. Cedarcrest’s Reed Gilmore was 0-2 with a walk, run scored and RBI for Elevate in the contest.
