Mount Si baseball appears out of playoff chase after loss to Newport, and news from the hardwood on this Tuesday…..

Good Tuesday morning. We’ll get to softball and track a little later on hopefully but we start with baseball and it looks like Mount Si High School’s baseball team is going to be playing out the string at this point after falling last night to Newport.

Mount Si was held to just three hits in a 2-0 loss to the Knights at Bob Albo Field in south Bellevue on the Newport High School campus that dropped the Wildcats to 6-10 in league, 9-10 overall. They are two games back of the final playoff spots with two games left to play and appear all but eliminated from the playoff chase as only the top six teams advance to the WesKing 4A district playoffs.

Pitcher Jack Freytag was dominant on the hill for Newport, scattering those three Mount Si hits in six innings of dominant shutout baseball, walking two and striking out six. Dante Santulli powered the Knights with a homer. Wildcat starter Jimmy Pratapas worked 5 1/3 innings allowing the two runs on eight his walking one and striking out two.

Newport with the win moved into a tie for third place in league with Eastlake and are locked into the playoffs.

Mount Si plays the Wolves tomorrow night at Eastlake High School at 6:00 p.m. The school is located off 228th Ave. NE in Sammamish.

In other Kingco 4A games last night, scores and highlights from which are provided to us by a company we think should be an official partner of both this conference and the WIAA for baseball and softball in GameChanger, available on phones and tablets in their app stores:

Issaquah 9, Bothell 1: A homer from Colin Patrick powered the Eagles, and pitcher Ernie Whelan did the rest as Issy moved into a tie for the final playoff spots with a win over the Cougars at Issaquah High School. Whelan went six innings and only allowed six hits and a walk striking out nine. Both teams are now at 8-8 overall in league play, part of a three-way tie for only two available spots with Woodinville.

Skyline 3, Eastlake 2: Braden Bartholomae’s sixth-inning single scored Caden Culver and Blake Goldthwait lifting the Spartans to a critical road win over the Wolves on the Plateau in the regular-season finale of the Sammamish backyard rivalry series. The Spartans moved a game ahead of the Wolves and tied North Creek for first in league at 12-4 overall, with Eastlake tied with the Knights in third at 11-5. Goldthwait led the Spartans going 2-3 with that run scored. Pitcher Manu Bhat had another solid outing for Sparty, working five innings allowing the two Wolves runs, one of which was earned, on six hits, walking two and striking out three. Grady Woodward led Eastlake going 1-4 with an RBI and pitcher Andrew Recob went 5 1/3 innings allowing three runs on six hits walking two and striking out three.

Woodinville 12, Redmond 2: Eli Jones had two hits, scored three runs and drove in three more for the Falcons as they handled the Mustangs at Hartman Park in Redmond to get themselves into that three-way tie at 8-8 for the final playoff spots. Ty Vandall doubled as well for Woody scoring two runs and driving in two more.

North Creek 5, Inglemoor 3: A quality performance on the mound by pitcher Jack Cochran paced the Jaguars to the road win over the Vikings in Kenmore. Cochran allowed three runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings of work striking out seven, and he was aided by Cayden Christopherson, who had a hit and drove in two runs. Ryan Moran came in to finish the game for the Jaguars on the hill and got the save striking out two of the three hitters he faced. The win keeps North Creek tied for first with Skyline.

We also have a basketball note for you from the weekend we needed to catch up on this morning. And it’s a fantastic one.

A reunion on the college hardwood for old friends, former Mount Si teammates
“Reunited, and it feels so good” were the words sung by the duo Peaches and Herb for their late 1970’s hit song “Reunited.” Well, for a pair of Mount Si High School boys’ hoops alums, that’s probably the feeling they have following the news from this past Friday night of a reunion of friends and former teammates on the college basketball floor.

2020 Wildcat alum Jabe Mullins took to Instagram, according to the Spokane Spokesman-Review, and announced his transfer from Washington State University, where he had played the past two seasons, to Montana State University for this coming season. Going to Bozeman, MT, where MSU is located, means a reunion with friend and former Mount Si teammate Tyler Patterson, a four-year starter for the Bobcats. The two were instrumental in winning the Washington state high school 4A basketball title in 2020 for the Wildcats, and now the two will look to achieve championship glory together on the basketball floor in the Big Sky Conference.

Both guys will have a year left of eligibility and are set to play in the same conference as a pair of other Mount Si grads – former 2020 teammate Hayden Curtiss with Portland State University, and incoming freshman – and 2024 state title winner – Trevor Hennig with Weber State University. The Big Sky is where it’s going to be at this winter for Mount Si hoops fans and we are here for it. Mullins, Henning and Patterson are all from Snoqualmie, while Curtiss is from North Bend.

Schedules for the upcoming season will be released sometime this summer.
