Diamond cuts: Hetzel, Mount Si bats show Bothell’s vulnerability without ace pitcher, and a surprise for Wildcat baseball gives them a sliver of postseason hope……

Good Thursday morning. Diamond cuts and we lead off with some softball. Sure looks like the Kingco 4A postseason race may be taking on a little bit of a different dimension and that is coming courtesy of perhaps the hottest team right now and that would be your Mount Si Wildcats. Mount Si won its third straight game last night and in doing so ended the undefeated league season for the Kingco’s leaders in Bothell and in the process perhaps underscored a cruel reality for the Cougars – they are vulnerable without their ace pitcher in the circle.

Once again without senior Julianne Rose, Mount Si bats went to town on Bothell pitching and mercy-ruled them, beating the Cougars 14-3 in five innings. Ally Hetzel led the scoring off with a first-inning grand slam, the first at the high school level for the star Wildcat junior catcher, and that was followed by a solo homer from Avery Bielenberg, and from there, Mount Si fans knew this would be their night. Hetzel hit a second homer later and Addie Craig also round-tripped it as the Wildcats cruised. Hetzel ended up driving in six runs for Mount Si in this one, and that was music to the ears of freshman Jenna Nowak, who went the distance allowing three runs on seven hits striking out seven.

Mount Si is at North Creek tomorrow night for another biggie as the Wildcats look to cement a playoff spot. They currently sit in the last playoff spot, sixth overall in league with an 8-6 league mark. Keep winning, though, and the postseason positioning is going to get better. And as for Bothell, here’s hoping they get Rose back soon because if they don’t, life could be very challenging for them down the stretch.

Wildcat JV’s fall: A pair of doubles by Maya Engel, in which she scored a run and drove in a second, proved not enough for Mount Si’s JV in a 10-4 loss to the Cougar junior varsity at home last night in Snoqualmie. Mount Si’s JV’s resume action taking on Bothell tomorrow, at Bothell.

Other Kingco and Wesco scores last night, powered by GameChanger and their apps, available on phones and tablets in their app stores. A note and that is Cedarcrest’s game at Snohomish got rained out with no word on a reschedule for that game. The Red Wolves are slated to host three straight days of home games starting this afternoon against Shorewood, but with this morning’s rain today’s game is likely to get rained out. We will update on our “X” feed @snovalleysports later when we get word.

College note:

Simmons winding down season: The ladies at Boston’s Simmons University are almost done with their season after being swept yesterday in a doubleheader.

The Sharks fell 3-1 and 5-3 in the two games to Boston-area foe Emmanuel College in the home finale for the Simmons ladies this spring. Sophomore Emery Kreidel-Reimer played in both games for the Sharks, going 0-3 in the opener and 0-2 in the nightcap. She is from North Bend and a 2022 Mount Si High School alum. Simmons plays Johnson & Wales of Rhode Island for two Saturday in Rhode Island to close out the season. They currently are 12-21 on the season.

Baseball: Faint playoff hope for Mount Si following surprising road win
Just when you thought it was safe to put the Mount Si High School baseball season to an end, the Wildcat boys decided to reel everyone back in for a fight to the finish thanks to a fantastic performance last night in a stunning road win over Eastlake.

A four-run third inning broke a 3-3 tie and pitchers Colin Fraser and Avery Procter did the rest as Mount Si surprised Eastlake 7-5 last night at Eastlake High School in Sammamish. The win put Mount Si (7-10 league, 10-10 overall) a game back of the final playoff spots with one game left to go in the season. More on the playoff possibilities in a moment.

Jimmy Pratapas led the way for Mount Si, going 3-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Will Gregory added two hits, a run scored and RBI to the efforts. Fraser went five innings allowing three runs on four hits, walking six and striking out three and Procter worked the final two frames on the hill, allowing a couple of runs, but finished things out well for the ‘Cats.

So, Mount Si’s playoff chances ride on the following scenario. The Wildcats tomorrow host Skyline. Mount Si must win that game and get losses from both Issaquah, against Inglemoor, and Bothell, against Woodinville, to force a likely three-way playoff for that sixth and final slot. A faint hope, but faint is better than none and it is hoped the Wildcats will give it their all tomorrow night in what effectively sets up as a playoff game for the chance to go to the playoffs. 6:30 first pitch tomorrow night at home in Snoqualmie against Skyline.

Also last night:

Barrick powers Eastlake JV: Adam Barrick had three hits, coming a homer short of hitting for the cycle for Eastlake’s junior varsity in a 12-5 Wolves win over Mount Si’s junior varsity last night in the Wildcat JV’s home finale for the spring. Mount Si’s JV is at Skyline tomorrow. Scott Corder led the Wildcats in last night’s game, going 3-4 with three runs scored.

The other Kingco scores from GameChanger and their apps:

Skyline 11, Newport 6
Inglemoor 6, Redmond 0
North Creek 10, Bothell 0
Woodinville 1, Issaquah 0

College news now:

NWAC East Division Wednesday: Mount Si High School alums were featured yesterday in another round of games in the community college Northwest Athletic Conference’s East Division, a series we call “NWAC East Division Wednesday”. The main event was in Pasco, where Columbia Basin split two with Walla Walla. WWCC took the first game 4-3 before Basin rallied for a 5-3 win in the nightcap. Freshman Alex Chamberlain played in both games for CBC. The Snoqualmie product was 1-4 in the opener then went 2-4 with a run scored and RBI in the nightcap. Sophomore Chris Jarocki, also from Snoqualmie, worked the nightcap only for the Hawks and was 0-3 with a walk.

Up Highway 17 in Moses Lake, Big Bend swept a pair from Yakima Valley, winning the opener in a 15-4 blowout then needing to hold on for a 5-4 win in the nightcap. Sophomore Tyler Disch, from Snoqualmie, pitched two innings in the nightcap for the Yaks, walking three and striking out three more. Disch is a 2021 grad, Jarocki is a 2022 alum and Chamberlain graduated last year. The teams will meet each other on the other guy’s home field Saturday.
