Diamond cuts on a Saturday…..

Good Saturday morning. We are going to lead off with a little baseball this morning and Mount Si High School’s baseball season came to an end last night on a down note, as they were held to only three hits by Skyline pitcher Mike Grimmer in a 4-0 home loss to the Spartans in Snoqualmie.

The hits for Mount Si belonged to Clayton Crooks, Colin Fraser and Avery Procter as the Wildcats finished their season at 9-12 on the year, 7-11 in league play. Grimmer walked one and struck out five while Owen Fontenelle led the Spartans going 2-3 with a run.

Mount Si JV’s end on strong note: Four pitchers combined on a one-hitter for Mount Si’s junior varsity as they beat Skyline last night 3-1 to close out their season. Pitchers Alex Ott, Zach Cezar, J.D. Tenhulzen and Alex Martinez combined on that one-hitter striking out four. Cole Taylor led Mount Si going 3-4 with a double and two runs scored while Kevin Ellis had two hits including a double, driving in a run.

Cedarcrest falls at home: The Red Wolves were held to three hits in a 4-0 home loss in Duvall last night to Shorewood. Quinn Larson, Luke Thompson and Murphy Vliem had the hits for CHS. Pitcher Jackson Rees allowed four runs on just two hits in six innings of work, walking two and striking out six for the Red Wolves, who are in action Tuesday in the play-in round at the Northwest District 2A playoffs. They are taking on Sehome at 5:00pm up in Bellingham. Preview and pick for that game then here at the Journal.

“TB3” homers, but Tech falls: North Bend’s Troy Baunsgard homered but it was not enough for Tennessee Tech in a 7-2 loss last night in Martin, TN, to the University of Tennessee-Martin.

Baunsgard, from North Bend and a 2020 Mount Si HS grad who wears #3 for the Golden Eagles hence the “TB3” moniker, hit the homer, his seventh of the year, in the third inning of the contest. The homer accounted for the only scoring for Tech, who spotted the Martin crew five first-inning runs and could not recover. The two teams play again today.

Pro baseball
Another solid night on the hill for Duvall’s Davenport: Pitcher Aaron Davenport delivered another solid performance leading his minor league team to a win.

The 2019 Cedarcrest High School alum, from Duvall, scattered a pair of runs on only three hits leading the Akron Rubber Ducks to a 6-2 win over the Altoona Curve last night in Pennsylvania. In five innings of work, Davenport walked three and struck out three for the Cleveland Guardians-affiliated team. Two relievers came in to finish the game for Akron, the Guardians “AA” squad. Davenport was drafted by Cleveland in the 2021 MLB amateur draft from the University of Hawaii.

The two teams play today but he will not pitch again until later next week.

Softball: Hetzel’s bat hot, but Mount Si falls short to North Creek
It was a busy day yesterday for Mount Si High School junior star catcher Ally Hetzel. First, she participated in a luncheon at the school as one of several Student-Athletes of the Quarter, then last night, she turned up the heat with the bat, hitting two homers for the Wildcats, but they could not turn the corner and take down North Creek.

North Creek scored four second-inning runs and then it was a case of Mount Si responding followed by a Jaguar counter-response, and it led to the home NC side winning 8-7. Reagan Fleming went the distance in the circle for North Creek and she, too, homered for the Jaguars. Hetzel finished with four hits, scoring two runs and driving in five more.

The Wildcats are at Newport Monday.

Scoreboard from GameChanger and their apps:

Snohomish 12, Cascade 2
