Friday diamond cuts: CHS baseball falls in heartbreaking walk-off

Good Friday morning. With track and field off until after spring break, we focus on some Wesco Conference diamond cuts, most notably with Cedarcrest High School’s baseball team, who suffered a heartbreaking road loss last night up at Lynnwood. With two out and trailing Cedarcrest 4-3, the Royals hit three straight singles and walked it off stunning the Red Wolves 5-4 at Lynnwood High School.

It all started with a single from Sergio Navaro, who then stole second base to set up Jace Hampson, who singled off CHS pitcher Cooper Ayers scoring Navaro to tie the contest. A passed ball put Hampson at third base, and Ryder Bowman walked it off with a single as Lynnwood rescued victory from the jaws of defeat. The end result ruined what otherwise was a fine performance by CHS pitcher Luke Thompson, who went 6 2/3 innings allowing four runs, one earned, on only two hits, walking two and striking out 10.

Quinn Larson led CHS with a hit and three RBI’s. Pitcher D.J. McGuire got the win on the hill for Lynnwood, working five innings in relief allowing a run on three hits, walking three and striking out four.

CHS is off until Monday when they host Meadowdale. Game time is 4:00 at home on Cedarcrest High School’s campus in Duvall.

Edmonds-Woodway 1, Mountlake Terrace 0: The fans got a quality pitcher’s duel in this one, as Ed-Wood’s Grafton Marshall-Inman outlasted Mountlake’s Robert Swan in the rivalry battle in Edmonds. Marshall-Inman, a freshman, allowed only two hits in his complete-game performance, walking one and striking out six, while Swan, a senior, allowed a run on just three hits in his complete-game effort, walking four and striking out one. Thomas Shults doubled and scored the lone run in the game for Ed-Wood.

Meadowdale 3, Shorewood 0
Shorecrest 4, Cascade 2

College baseball:

Linn-Benton 4, Umpqua 1 (game one, doubleheader): The L-B crew made the trek south down I-5 to Roseburg, OR, and pocketed a win in the first of two. Sophomore Aidan Dougherty, he of Snoqualmie and a 2022 Mount Si HS alum, was 1-3 in this one with two walks and a run scored for L-B.

Augustana 9, Sioux Falls 0 (game one, doubleheader, Wed.): The Vikings made short work of their Sioux Falls city rivals in this midweek contest. Senior Spencer Marenco, he of North Bend and a 2019 Mount Si HS alum, was 0-1 in the game. He did not play for Augustana in the nightcap of the twinbill, won by the Vikings 6-4 giving them the sweep of the pair.

Linn-Benton 8, Umpqua 7 (game two, doubleheader): L-B needed every last run in this one to dispatch the host Umpqua squad in the nightcap of the twinbill taking the sweep. Dougherty, for L-B, went 2-4. He will be transferring this summer to play next season for the University of Connecticut.

Softball: Meadowdale stuns Monroe
Cedarcrest High School’s softball ladies were off yesterday, but headlining the other Wesco action was a good one up in Monroe where visiting Meadowdale scored three seventh-inning runs to stun Monroe’s Bearcats 7-6.

Mia Cantu homered and doubled leading the Mavericks, scoring three runs and driving in three more. Players that should be familiar with you from our club coverage headlined things for Monroe. Vivian Knuckey had two hits pacing the Bearcats scoring two runs and driving in a third while pitcher Holly Pettit went the distance with only one of the seven Meadowdale runs she allowed being earned on seven hits, walking three and striking out four. Both players are part of teams with Woodinville-based Absolute Blast’s club program that feature Red Wolve or Mount Si High School players – Knuckey is teammates with CHS’s Josie Fiala and Wildcat Georgia Dennis on the 16U Rafferty team while Pettit is part of a Blast 14U team that also features Mount Si freshman ace pitcher Jenna Nowak.

Also, Hadley Oylear doubled for Monroe; her dad is also a longtime club coach that has worked in the past with athletes from both Valley high schools at the club level.
